Opinion: Vijay Turns Into ‘Publicity CM’

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is increasingly drawing attention not just for his governance style, but also for what critics describe as an aggressive image-building campaign that follows his every public move.
From visiting public places to interacting with ordinary citizens, nearly every activity involving Vijay now quickly becomes headline material across television channels, social media platforms, and party-affiliated networks. Political observers say the carefully managed visual branding around the Chief Minister is beginning to create the impression of a “Publicity CM” rather than a low-profile administrator.
Supporters of Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), however, strongly reject the criticism. They argue that the massive public attention is natural given Vijay’s extraordinary popularity as a film superstar turned politician. According to them, every public appearance of the leader automatically attracts media coverage because of his unmatched fan base and political curiosity surrounding his government.
Since taking office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay has remained constantly visible in public life. Whether it is interacting with schoolchildren, participating in welfare reviews, or making surprise field visits, photographs and videos are rapidly circulated online by supporters and media teams.
Critics from opposition circles believe excessive focus on optics can eventually overshadow governance priorities. They argue that frequent publicity-driven narratives may create a cinematic political atmosphere rather than one centered purely on administration and policy execution.
At the same time, Vijay’s defenders insist that modern politics is inseparable from media visibility. They point out that today’s political leaders across India rely heavily on public engagement, digital communication, and image management to stay connected with voters.
Interestingly, Vijay’s political rise itself has become a major national talking point. Several film personalities and public figures have openly praised his transition from cinema to politics and his rapid ascent to the Chief Minister’s office.
Whether the “Publicity CM” tag ultimately becomes a political liability or a successful branding strategy will depend on how Vijay balances media attention with governance performance in the months ahead.
