Vijay Takes Charge: A Historic Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
In a landmark event that marks a paradigm shift in South Indian politics, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The ceremony took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, where Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office.
Breaking the Duopoly:
Vijay’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s chair ends nearly six decades of alternating rule by the two major Dravidian giants—DMK and AIADMK. Leading a coalition government, Vijay secured the support of 120 MLAs in the 234-member house, including allies like the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
Highlights of the Ceremony:
The event was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Along with Vijay, nine senior TVK leaders took the oath as cabinet ministers. Although the Congress is a key partner in this coalition, no Congress MLAs were sworn in during the initial ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, the new Chief Minister emphasized his commitment to transparent and welfare-oriented governance. Governor Arlekar has directed the new administration to seek a vote of confidence in the Assembly on or before May 13 to prove their majority. This victory is seen as a historic turning point, reflecting the electorate’s desire for a fresh alternative in Tamil Nadu.
