Koratala Siva’s new grand action drama stands tall with Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan. The film promises action, high-octane sequences, and strong performances, while exploring a central theme of fear and its influence across generations. Jr NTR delivers impressive action as both Devara and his son Vara. The much-expected film has failed with a predictable storyline.
Staged in the 1970s, Devara is the movie story of the piracy leader, Bhaira, who fights a battle within himself with Saif Ali Khan and the defeated Devara running away from the life he has taken to living in violence while Bhaira and his sidekick, Kunjara, resist, hence creating scope for a clash between righteousness and brutality.Amidst the mass moments and dramatic tension, the story unfolds as a rivalry, but it lacks the emotional depth needed to connect with the audience.
Director Koratala Siva finally hopes to redeem himself from the debacle of his last film, Acharya. The world that the film paints is aesthetically beautiful, thanks to Rathnavel’s excellent use of colors. While replete with the rich tones of blue and red that epitomize the emotional muscle of the characters, the script spells out everything for you in a rather predictable turn of events, stretching the narrative over a total runtime of nearly three hours.

Final Verdict & Rating
Jr NTR shines in his dual roles, pulling off an extraordinary performance as the thug Devara and the shell-shocked, fearful Vara. Much to be said for Saif Ali Khan as Bhaira, a menacing figure who brings weight to those intense confrontations. Really, Janhvi Kapoor has a rather underwritten role, barely anything that makes her character Thangam count for much. The film’s score by Anirudh Ravichander helps enormously in key moments, but those songs really impede the flow.
The movie wraps up with a cliffhanger, preparing viewers for Devara Part 2, but it makes them question whether splitting the film into two parts was necessary.
Rating: 2.5/5 stars.
