The GOAT Unexpected Success: Thalapathy Vijay’s Film Surprises North India

Though The GOAT, starring Thalapathy Vijay, did well in traditional Tamil film markets, its increasing popularity in North India has taken many by surprise.

The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT), Thalapathy Vijay’s most recent movie, has exceeded expectations even though it has garnered mixed reviews throughout South India. The movie had a very successful opening weekend, grossing over Rs 200 crore worldwide in just three days of its release. While the film has received a resounding response from Vijay’s usual strongholds both domestically and internationally, an unexpected trend has formed from the states of North India, a region that is normally less receptive to Tamil cinema.

The GOAT shows that there is more possibility for Tamil films to get traction in the Hindi belt, even though it hasn’t completely changed the game for these movies in North India. Film exhibitor Akshay Rathi drew attention to the underutilized potential of Tamil films in the area. Regretfully, The GOAT’s Hindi version received very little advertising and was essentially dumped into North Indian theaters. Here is where Tamil celebrities like Vijay and Ajith ought to go aggressive with their movie promotion. It’s just a question of time until the content in the Hindi-speaking market gets a steady following, as Akshay stated to Desimartini.

Akshay explained that the Hindi market hasn’t been delivering content in abundance, so when films from Tamil, Telugu, or Kannada arrive, they get picked up. He added that even if these films are slightly underwhelming, they often surpass what’s being offered locally. He noted that North Indian audiences, especially in mass-market regions, remain underserved with films that resonate with their tastes. He cited the success of films like Pushpa, which found an unexpected but huge audience in the region, and even mentioned Vijay’s previous film, Beast, which performed well on North Indian screens for several weeks.

The movie’s performance in the Hindi market was also discussed by cinema trade expert Taran Adarsh, who tweeted, “GOAT shows a robust upward trend on Day 3 [Sat], with rise in mass-market regions as projected… The current task is to maintain this momentum beginning on Monday and continuing through the 4-day long weekend.”

Adarsh also pointed out that The GOAT’s box office potential was severely limited because it was not available in key North Indian multiplex chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis. “Had it been available in these theatres, the figures would have been much higher,” he said.

The Hindi version’s box office receipts in North India were highlighted by Adarsh, who gave specific figures: “Thu 2.80 cr, Fri 1.90 cr, Sat 3.10 cr.” In total, ₹7.80 cr. Nett BOC.
