AR Murugadoss used to be the most in-demand director in Indian film circles, one who would produce blockbusters such as Ghajini, Thuppakki, and Kaththi. But things have not gone his way in the last couple of years. With Darbar (2020) turning out to be a dud, he had a difficult time finding a new project. Sivakarthikeyan has taken a gamble and has committed to working with him on Madharasi, which was going smoothly. But an expensive error on Sivakarthikeyan’s part may now not affect the fate of the film.
Sikandar’s Flop Shines Dark Light on Madharasi
The trouble started when Salman Khan went to AR Murugadoss for Sikandar. Sivakarthikeyan, who had already shot 80% of Madharasi, gave Murugadoss the go-ahead to do Sikandar before finishing their film. It seemed like a sensible move at that time since it was going to let Murugadoss do a big Bollywood movie while Madharasi was kept on hold.
But Sikandand has proved to be a huge disaster. Critics and audiences alike have totally trashed the film, and several of them are now convinced that Murugadoss has lost his touch. The poor reception of Sikandar has now left Madharasi in an awkward situation.
How Sikandar’s Failure Will Affect Madharasi
A director’s reputation is of paramount importance in a film’s pre-release business, and Murugadoss’ reputation has suffered a severe setback after Sikandar. Even before its release, Madharasi had created some decent buzz because of Murugadoss’ brand and Sivakarthikeyan’s rising popularity. But now, with Sikandar tanking, distributors and audiences have lost faith in Murugadoss’ capabilities.
Here’s how Sikandar’s failure can affect Madharasi:
- Decreased Pre-Release Business – The satellite and OTT rights of Madharasi could suffer, as there will be apprehension among the buyers to spend money on a Murugadoss film post his recent setback.
- Dipping Audience Interest – The fans who were initially enthused about Madharasi would now hesitate, fearing that Madharasi might meet the same fate as Sikandar.
- Probable Delays – With Murugadoss under severe pressure following Sikandar’s flop, there is a possibility of Madharasi’s release getting delayed, since the makers could attempt to do some last-minute corrections to rebuild audience confidence.
A Gaffe Like Ram Charan’s Game Changer Case
Sivakarthikeyan is not the first star to commit such an error. The same thing occurred with Game Changer, featuring Ram Charan and helmed by Shankar. While Shankar took a break from Game Changer to finish Indian 2, Ram Charan’s movie went on the backburner and lost its original buzz. When Indian 2 flopped, Game Changer also suffered from its pre-release hype.
Sivakarthikeyan has similarly made the same error by allowing Murugadoss to start work on Sikandar when Madharasi was not completed. Had Madharasi been completed and put out on screen before Sikandar, it could have enjoyed greater reception and market value. Now, harm is already incurred, and Sivakarthikeyan may regret doing so in the future.
Can Sivakarthikeyan and Murugadoss Bounce Back?
Against all the negative vibes for Madharasi, there is still hope. Sivakarthikeyan has a robust fan base, and if Madharasi is good in terms of content, it can regain the trust of the audiences. In order to have a successful return, the team must:
- Release a strong teaser and trailer to show that Madharasi is independent of Sikandar’s failure.
- Plan a well-timed release date so that it does not clash with major box-office releases.
- Depend on Sivakarthikeyan’s popularity and promotions to create buzz around the movie.
- Perhaps re-edit and refine the movie to provide best-in-class quality.
If done correctly, Madharasi can still make a comeback. But the path ahead has become much more challenging for the team because of Murugadoss’ worsening reputation.

Final Thoughts
Sivakarthikeyan’s choice of permitting Murugadoss to work on Sikandar before finishing Madharasi is now turning out to be an expensive error. With Sikandar getting abysmal reviews, Madharasi has a hard time trying to catch up and regain its momentum.
Though Sivakarthikeyan is famous for coming back strong with intelligent career decisions, this is a learning experience for actors to make sure that their directors stay committed to their work. Now, the world waits to see if Madharasi will be able to overcome the negative and show that Sivakarthikeyan’s gamble was worth it.
Time alone will reveal if Madharasi will overcome the setback or be victimized by Sikandar’s fall. Let’s wait and watch!
