Veteran actress Simran, arguably the most iconic star of Tamil cinema of the late ’90s and early 2000s, recently made a sentimental announcement that transported fans down memory lane. During an honest chat, Simran revealed that she was initially considered for the female lead in the 2005 Tamil blockbuster Chandramukhi, which later became iconic courtesy Jyothika’s portrayal.
This is a surprise to many, since Jyothika’s performance as Ganga in Chandramukhi stands in the record books of Tamil cinema as one of the most gripping and subtle performances by a heroine. But according to Simran, she was the one who had been originally signed up for the film, and destiny had something else in mind.
“Chandramukhi would have been played by me in the role played later by Jyothika. Everything was spoken about, and I was eagerly waiting. But I had to take a hard decision at that time — I backed out of the movie for my family’s sake,” Simran disclosed in an interview recently.
This was a reflection of the personal sacrifices one makes behind the camera — a world away from the glamour that they are allowed to display to the audience. Simran’s choice during that time had been an indication of her values placed on family above professional gains, something that proved meaningful for most fans of her work and her principles.
A Lost Opportunity and a Delayed Dream
Chandramukhi, which was released in 2005, was a milestone film for more than one reason. It was Rajinikanth’s return to films after a short gap and also turned out to be one of the decade’s largest commercial hits. Chandramukhi was a remake of the Kannada film Apthamitra in Tamil and saw the inclusion of horror-thriller aspects in an elaborate, family-based story. For Simran, being denied Chandramukhi was an opportunity to share the screen with the Superstar lost in golden moments.
“Naturally, I was disappointed. Not only was it a very strong role, but the opportunity to work with Rajinikanth sir would have been a dream fulfilled. At the time, I thought the moment had slipped away from me forever,” said Simran.
But, as fate would have it, the possibility to share screen space with Thalaivar hadn’t been lost — but postponed.
The Dream Fulfilled in Petta
Years later, in 2019, Simran did get her time. She was on board for Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta, a paean to old Rajinikanth-style action and charm. Simran acted in the role of Mangalam, a poised and earthy woman who has a strong emotional bond with Rajinikanth’s Kaali.
“I was thrilled when I was approached for Petta. It was as if fate had given me a second chance,” Simran smiled. “Collaborating with Rajini sir in Petta was all I had hoped for — and more. He is humble, disciplined, and exudes such lovely energy on set. I realized then that sometimes, when you wait patiently, life gives you something even more beautiful.”
Petta was a box office success and was much loved for the nostalgia of bringing back Rajinikanth’s vintage charm. Simran’s character, while not as prominent as in Chandramukhi, was mature, sophisticated, and emotionally resonant. It was a fulfilling journey that addressed the lost chance from the past.
Simran’s Legacy and Grace in Choices
Simran’s career in the Tamil industry is characterized by brilliance, dignity, and versatility. From sizzling romantic heroes in Vaali and Kannathil Muthamittal to comedic roles in Panchathantiram and drama-drenched characters, she has etched a legacy that few could match.
Her latest admission regarding Chandramukhi not only uncovers a lesser-known chapter of Tamil film history but also showcases her humility and honesty. She did not show remorse but gratitude for how things finally turned out.
“Everything happens for a reason. I think Chandramukhi was not destined for me, but Petta was. I am glad that I could eventually act in a film with the legend. That is more than enough for me,” she said in conclusion.
Fans React with Mixed Emotions
Simran’s disclosure generated a tide of admiration and nostalgia on the social media platforms. Most fans felt that she would have been fantastic as Ganga, while others felt that Jyothika added a special intensity that made Chandramukhi legendary. But everyone had one thing in common — Simran’s poise and strength of spirit to confront her choices in life is deeply inspiring.
A few of the fans even started wondering what Chandramukhi would’ve been like with Simran in the starring role, speculating that the character would’ve had a different emotional depth considering Simran’s past work in dramatic roles.

Final Thoughts
The film industry is never predictable. Parts change hands, chances come and go, but some truths persist — such as talent, perseverance, and graciousness. Simran’s tale of missing Chandramukhi and ending up being a part of Petta is an ideal representation of how fate is mysterious. She might have missed one legendary character, but she finally achieved her dream and left an indelible imprint in Tamil cinema once more.
Amidst the ever-unfolding canvas of Kollywood, tales such as these remind audience members of the humanness of superstardom — where choices are taken with the heart, visions occasionally get pushed back, but those that hold on are eventually given their platform.
Simran didn’t merely perform alongside Rajinikanth — she worked for that second, and the public loved each moment of it.
