Mazaka Struggles at the Box Office Despite Positive Talk

Sundeep Kishan’s Mazaka opened to much anticipation, the biggest-budget movie of his life. The unit invested a lot of effort in promotions, aiming to generate a good buzz among viewers. Their attempts did not materialize as desired. The audio and trailer did not spark any interest, and thus a weak response greeted the movie even before its release. Now, with good word of mouth too, Mazaka is finding it hard to be successful at the box office.

Weak Openings for Mazaka

Mazaka opened with a below-average to good response like Trinadha Rao Nakkina’s past releases such as Nenu Local, Hello Guru Prema Kosame, and Dhamaka. But unlike those movies, Mazaka was unable to benefit from the holiday boost of Maha Shivaratri. The box office collections were still low on the day of the opening, which was a cause for worry for the makers and distributors.

Trinadha Rao’s Dhamaka was his previous release, and that became a hit at the box office mainly because of its sensational soundtrack scored by Bheems Ceciroleo. The music fetched crowds to theatres big time. For Mazaka, however, the producers decided on a new music director, who proved to be an inappropriate decision. The music didn’t create much pre-release excitement, and it seriously hampered the first run pull at the box office.

Mazaka Confronts Strong Competition from Dragon

Mazaka apart from a poor promotion campaign has strong competition coming its way in the form of a dubbed film, Dragon. The film has already gained footing in cinemas with high attendance rates and overshadowed Mazaka. Though Mazaka had good word of mouth with those who went to watch it, the challenge posed by Dragon has hindered Sundeep Kishan’s film to make headways.

Low-budget movies tend to fare poorly when a rival film does well at the box office. The audience has clearly indicated that they prefer Dragon, which reflected on Mazaka’s ticket sales. Most of the viewers who were thinking of watching Mazaka ended up watching Dragon. Consequently, Mazaka experienced low footfalls during its early days, which impacted its business as a whole.

Poor Timing Affects Mazaka’s Box Office Performance

Aside from the stiff competition, Mazaka was also victimized by release timing. A number of low-budget films opened simultaneously, which made it more challenging for Mazaka to be noticed. Because the movie did not have sufficient pre-release buzz, it had a hard time drawing audiences in.

While the movie had good word-of-mouth, no distinct selling point detracted from its performance. The film required a big boost by way of promotions or audience participation, which it didn’t receive. If things are to continue in this manner, Mazaka may not remain in theaters for long.

Why Mazaka is Underperforming

There are a number of reasons why Mazaka’s box office performance has been so poor:
1. Lack of Pre-Release Hype – The trailer and promotions failed to generate sufficient hype, lowering audience interest.
2. Poor Music Album – In contrast to Dhamaka, which was helped by chartbuster tracks, Mazaka could not generate buzz with its music.
3. Dragon’s Competition – Dragon’s success took a heavy toll on Mazaka’s collections.
4. Poor Release Timing – Several small films releasing together, splitting the audience.
5.\tLow Theater Footfalls – For all the good talk, the movie did not attract huge audiences.

Can Mazaka Recover?

Mazaka must have a big collections boost over the weekend to recover from the sluggish opening. The producers and distributors of the film hope for a miracle. If the movie picks up momentum in the days ahead, it might still manage to break even. But if the trend persists, distributors stand to suffer heavy financial losses.

Several reasons may make it easier for Mazaka to improve its collections. Word of mouth may bring more audiences, particularly if the movie gets good word of mouth support from Sundeep Kishan’s fans. Weekends and holidays crowds may also help the movie pick up slightly. But with Dragon still doing well, Mazaka has a tough time at the box office.

Final Thoughts

Even though it is Sundeep Kishan’s largest-budget film to date, Mazaka has not had a dramatic outing at the box office. The good reviews and talk for the film have not been sufficient to attract crowds in numbers. Poor pre-release hype, the release of Dragon, and poor release timing have all gone to make it a poor outing.
The next few days will be critical in deciding Mazaka’s fortunes. If the film is able to pick up speed over the weekend, it could regain some of its losses. If not, it may prove to be a box office dud.
