Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly was among the most eagerly awaited Tamil movies of 2025, and rightfully so. Right from the time its cool posters went up to the adrenaline-fueled teaser that followed, the film was able to generate a wildfire of excitement on social media and among fan circles. The teaser, in particular, struck all the right chords — slick visuals, Ajith’s mass appeal, and a thumping background score that had people raving.
As the campaign for promotion unfolded, the team launched two tracks from the film, both of which got a good response from fans and music enthusiasts. The tracks, supported by GV Prakash Kumar’s score, hinted at a fashion-forward entertainer that would take Ajith’s screen presence to the next level. But when anticipation was at its highest point, the official trailer of the movie was released at last — and to the surprise of the majority, it did not pack the knockout punch everyone was hoping for.
Ajith’s Look and Dialogues Work, But the Cut Fails to Impress
One of the greatest assets of Good Bad Ugly’s trailer is undoubtedly Ajith Kumar himself. His appearance, his fashion sense, and his trademark screen presence are all in place. His body language, intense looks, and powerful delivery of lines make a few instances in the trailer stand out. There is no doubt that Ajith still knows how to own the screen with ease.
But the trailer is let down by a lackluster cut. The edit feels disjointed, and the pace of the trailer as a whole fails to have the hold and rhythm that the teaser did. Even though it is full of action-packed shots and whistle-worthy seconds, the trailer does not succeed in maintaining the viewers’ interest throughout. It has a sense of being more of a montage of Ajith’s mass moments than it does of a well-composed look into what the story could be.
GV Prakash’s Background Score – A Mixed Bag
GV Prakash Kumar’s work has always been appreciated for its energy and musicality, particularly when combined with mass commercial entertainers. But this time, his trailer background score is criticized. Although the initial 30 seconds do provide a good impact, the rest of the trailer seems sonically disconnected. The BGM fails to enhance the visuals as it should and feels out of sync in many areas, blunting the overall effect of Ajith’s commanding presence.
For a film of this magnitude, particularly with the hype it has achieved thus far, the music had to hit harder and match the visuals. Regrettably, it lacks that and comes across as a wasted opportunity rather than a victorious musical moment.
Full of Self-References but Short on Substance
Something that stands out in the trailer is the excess of callbacks and references to Ajith’s previous films. While fan service is never a bad thing, the trailer appears to be banking on nostalgia more than presenting a new and compelling narrative hook. From Trisha and Prabhu’s dialogue references to Gambler and Billa, to Arjun Das referencing the classic “My F***king Game” line — these are moments of joy from die-hard fans but don’t give us any sense of the actual story or the stakes of the movie.
While such allusions may thrill hard-core enthusiasts, for the mainstream audience, the trailer has no discernible plot or emotional grounding. There exists a thin line between reveling in heritage and relying too heavily on previous triumphs, and sadly, the trailer leans in the latter’s direction.
Short of the Teaser’s High
This is perhaps the greatest disappointment — the Good Bad Ugly teaser had already established the tone. It was crisp, punchy, and short. It was able to create high curiosity without giving too much away and had fans pressing the replay button. In comparison, the trailer, which needed to take things to the next level, doesn’t quite achieve that same level of excitement.
Rather than building on the hype, it stalls. There’s nothing different that the trailer provides other than what had already been teased, and this lack of progress leaves fans disappointed. Expectations were at an all-time high, and the trailer just did not meet them.
Box Office Prospects Still Strong Despite Trailer Setback
Owing to the trailer’s limitations, it is pertinent to mention here that overall buzz for Good Bad Ugly is still intact. The fan base of Ajith Kumar, which is humongous, the teaser hype, and the strong word of mouth about the songs have already ensured a strong base for the box office opening of the film.
Initial box office expectations suggest that the film will open huge just on star power and buzz. The Independence Day weekend and absence of serious competition in Tamil Nadu at the time may also play to the advantage of the film. If the first-day word of mouth is positive, the film should easily bounce back from the poor response to the trailer.
Additionally, director Adhik Ravichandran has also indicated a few surprises in the feature film that are deliberately not revealed in the trailer. So, there’s still hope that the movie itself might end up being much better than its promotional cut.

Final Thoughts: A Trailer That Missed the Opportunity
In summary, though Good Bad Ugly is still basking in the glory of Ajith’s star power, its trailer did not take the opportunity to take the thrill to its peak level. With below-par editing, disorganized background scores, and no sense of storytelling, the trailer failed to keep fans on their toes. However, all hope is not lost. The actual content of the movie can still be the panacea for winning hearts and the box office.
The ball is in the court of the content and delivery of the film now. Until then, the fans will keep supporting and admiring their hero. And as has been many times before, Ajith could well turn the tables when the movie hits the screens.
August 15 cannot arrive soon enough for Team AK.
