Tamil filmdom has been shaken by a surprise storm. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has shifted its investigation focus to Kollywood, and the heat appears to be getting more and more intense. In what is being viewed as a stern crackdown, the ED carried out surprise and shocking raids on the offices of producer Aakash Baskaran, promoter of Dawn Pictures—a banner that has been supporting some big-ticket projects.
The operation, which went on quietly but at a fast pace, is said to have unearthed sensitive information and financial records. The search exercise was not just carried out at Aakash Baskaran’s house but also at his production offices and related places, sources claim. The shockwaves of the operation are now widening, with it being widely speculated that leading Tamil stars Dhanush, Silambarasan (Simbu), and Siva Karthikeyan may also find themselves under the ED scanner.
Actors in ED Crosshairs?
Though there has been no official word from the ED on notices being served, various sources say that the next round of investigation may target Kollywood’s top stars. This revelation has created a huge buzz among fans and insiders alike.
Actor Simbu, better known as STR, is especially in the spotlight as he is busy preparing for a film provisionally named STR49, which is being made by Dawn Pictures—the same production house that has been targeted by ED. The opening ceremony of the film was recently conducted, and the cast and crew were preparing for full-fledged shooting. Actress Kayadu Lohar, playing the heroine in STR49, is also said to be under the ED’s scanner, although her specific role in the issue cannot be ascertained.
There has been no statement so far from Simbu. However, an insider of the actor says that he does not have any direct role in monetary transactions and is fully complying with legal formalities, in case he is needed.
Dhanush and Siva Karthikeyan: Engrossed Schedules, Unwelcome Distractions
While actor Dhanush, who is busy with numerous projects, has also made it to the speculative list of celebrities who may receive ED notices. Dhanush is busy shooting Kubera and Idly Kadai and is part of a highly awaited Ilaiyaraaja biopic. Yesterday, he himself announced his next project called Kalam.
Considering Dhanush’s professional engagements and reputation in the industry, the speculation involving him has stunned fans. While no formal explanation has emerged from Dhanush’s camp, insiders in the industry are of the view that the actor can be pulled into the ED’s investigation because he has cooperated in the past or is currently working with Dawn Pictures or related producers.
To the list is Siva Karthikeyan, another upcoming star of Tamil films, shooting for Madharasi and Parasakthi now. Although there is no direct connection with Siva and the raided production house that came into the limelight recently, sources indicate the actor could have had monetary transactions or indirect connections with firms or entities under ED radar.
