Devara, the much-talked-about film, has completed a strong 25 days at the box office. While the movie didn’t content some, it’s been able to run very long and respectable for the strength of star power and audience loyalty, despite mixed reviews for the movie itself. Released post-SS Rajamouli’s blockbusters, Devara has been holding steady, but hasn’t really reaped the gold.
Ride of Devara at the Box Office
Devara opened to moderate expectations, and while the film had the advantage of a mainstream star attached to it, it never managed to create the kind of word of mouth that was anticipated. Like most of the other films released post-Rajamouli, Devara managed to collect some crowds but did not go on to create specific box office records. The mixed bag of content did not help the film in fetching repeat audience, but still, it has done reasonably well and has crossed the 25-day mark with decent collections in the relevant territories.
The film by comparison is struggling to match Saaho’s perfection albeit in a strong start, limiting its long run.
That would have been Saaho, one of the most-awaited films which created a huge noise at the box office. Similar numbers were huge for Saaho, especially considering Prabhas’s star power after Baahubali. However, the film could not stay the course; it underperformed during its long run and faded away because of weak content. The Devara case is somewhat similar-strong initial numbers but won’t fly long because of mixed reviews and content that isn’t universal.
What May Go Wrong with Blockbuster Talk?
Though Devara has done a pretty decent business at the box office, it is evident that a box office narrative in Telugu cinema always shows that if a film starts as a film of blockbuster talk, it can touch skies. The audiences of Tollywood know that if some film does great things from the very day of its release, with word of mouth and superb reviews all day, then it will do on the record-breaking long run at the box office. It means that the movie, Game Changer, may turn out to be the next biggie if it is in any way supported by a good reception when released. A Sankranti season is always upon an advantage, and a film like Game Changer may do even better than that.

The Potential of Sankranti Releases
Devara and Saaho proved how star-driven openings work but failed to sustain the momentum. For a film that opens with good word of mouth, such as a Game Changer, Sankranti festival season presents a perfect opportunity for box office domination as several viewers are awaiting the next big release. Such a film would set a record in revenues and put up one great long run on the silver screen.
