Thangalaan OTT Deal Canceled by Netflix: A Setback for the Film’s Digital Release

In a shocking twist of events, the much-awaited digital release of Thangalaan suffers a significant setback. Netflix had earlireated the rights to the film at an amount reportedly worth ₹35 crores; they have now decided to back out of the deal. This comes after several fears that the film may not sell so well on digital platforms, although Thangalaan was produced on a huge budget of ₹135 crores and features Chiyaan Vikram in a strong role.

A Setback on The Financial Side for Thangalaan

Thangalaan was something of a high-premium film, with a big production scale and the great acting of Vikram, but it could not do much well at the box office and the question mark remained over its profitability in the OTT scenario. The budget of ₹ 135 crores made the project high-stakes, and though people showered appreciation for Vikram’s acting, it was not enough to bring the film out of its commercial relegation.

The cancellation of the deal for ₹35 crores from Netflix is a massive setback for the post-theatrical revenue of the film, thereby making it more burdensome for the production house. It will have to look for alternative platforms or renegotiate new deals in its endeavour for a digital release of Thangalaan after the giant OTT takes a u-turn.

Why did Netflix Walk Away?

Uncertainty in regards to the performance of the film on digital platforms should be a significant reason for Netflix to back out from the film. The film failed to live up to box office expectations, and that may have led to Netflix being a bit cautious regarding returns from streaming rights, considering the underperformance of Thangalaan at the theatres. Though it had invested in a range of films, the rather dull performance of Thangalaan in theaters did raise serious questions regarding the ability of the film to attract an audience at a mass level online.

Vikram’s Performance Shines Bright

The overall performance of the movie remains questionable, but one thing is sure- Chiyaan Vikram did a good job for Thangalaan. The critics as well as viewers praised him for the commitment he did for the role. He portrayed his character so powerfully, and the fans love him. Vikram’s fan base stands intact and this is one of the biggest positives of the film with him on board.

What’s in Store for Thangalaan?

For Thangalaan, the digital release plan with Netflix seems uncertain because the company has withdrawn from that particular OTT deal. The filmmakers might consider other streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ Hotstar, with whom they would perhaps secure a new deal, or they might even bypass the OTT option and look into the possibility of releasing the film, either themselves or through some other option.
